What is a silk pillowcase?

A silk pillowcase is made from silk instead of cotton or polyester. Simple enough. But the material difference matters more than most people realise.

Cotton has a rough surface at the microscopic level. Every time you move your head at night, your hair and skin rub against thousands of tiny fibres. Over time this breaks hair at the shaft, creates sleep lines on your skin, and absorbs the skincare you put on before bed.

Silk has a naturally smooth surface. Hair glides across it instead of catching. Skin is not compressed and gripped for eight hours. And because silk does not absorb the way cotton does, your moisturiser and serum stay on your face overnight.

What to look for

Momme weight

Momme is how silk density is measured. Higher number means heavier, more durable silk.

• 16 momme: Thin, loses properties quickly. Common in budget options.
• 19 to 22 momme: Standard range. Acceptable quality for most uses.
• 25 momme: Heavier, better temperature regulation, more durable. What LuviaSleep uses.

If a silk pillowcase does not list its momme weight, treat that as a warning sign.

Silk grade

Silk is graded from A to 6A. 6A means the longest strands, fewest joins in the weave, and the smoothest surface. Most cheap options on Shopee and Lazada do not disclose their grade because most are Grade A or ungraded.

Zipper type

A poor zipper creates friction exactly where your hair is thinnest. Look for a hidden zipper that sits flush inside the casing. YKK zippers are the global standard used in quality clothing and luggage.

Silk type

Mulberry silk is the gold standard. It comes from silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves and produces the longest, most uniform strands. Wild silk and blended silk are lower quality options often sold under misleading labels.

What is actually true

What silk will not do: it will not repair already-damaged hair, reverse hair loss, or replace a skincare routine. Think of it as removing an unnecessary nightly source of damage rather than a treatment.

How much to pay in the Philippines

• PHP 300 to 800 on Shopee and Lazada: Almost always polyester satin. No grade, no momme. Will not deliver the benefits you are looking for.
• PHP 990 at MUJI Philippines: A legitimate product but no momme listed and limited sizes.
• PHP 1,499 to 1,999 at LuviaSleep: 25 momme, 6A grade, 100% mulberry silk with YKK zipper. The honest mid-range for genuine quality.

Silk vs satin: the key difference

Satin is a weave pattern, not a fabric. It can be made from polyester, nylon, or silk. Most affordable satin pillowcases in the Philippines are polyester woven in a satin pattern. They feel smooth but do not have the temperature regulation, friction properties, or longevity of real silk.

If a pillowcase is labelled satin silk without specifying 100% mulberry silk, assume it is polyester.
