What does momme mean?

Momme is the unit used to measure the weight of silk fabric. It works like thread count for cotton. A higher number means heavier, denser silk.

One momme equals 4.34 grams per square meter. So a 22 momme fabric weighs about 95 grams per square meter, and a 25 momme fabric weighs about 108 grams per square meter. That weight difference is what changes how the pillowcase performs.

What changes between 22 and 25 momme

Temperature

Heavier silk holds its cooling properties longer through the night. A 25 momme pillowcase stays cooler for longer, especially in humid Philippine weather. 22 momme will also feel cool but may warm up faster.

Durability

25 momme silk is thicker. It survives more wash cycles before it starts to thin or lose its smoothness. If you wash your pillowcase every one to two weeks as you should, 25 momme will last significantly longer.

Feel

Both feel smooth and soft. 25 momme has a slightly weightier, more substantial feel. Some people prefer 22 momme for feeling lighter. This is personal preference.

Price

25 momme costs more to produce. A brand selling 25 momme at the same price as 22 momme is cutting corners somewhere else. Expect to pay a small premium for the heavier weight.

What about 19 momme?

19 momme is the entry point for real silk. It feels smooth but wears out faster and the temperature regulation is weaker. Fine for occasional use, but not ideal for daily use in a warm climate like the Philippines.

Is 25 momme worth it?

If you are spending PHP 1,500 or more on a silk pillowcase, the small additional cost to get 25 momme over 22 momme is worth it. You sleep on it every single night. Durability and performance matter.
